The Housing Authority of DeKalb County recently bought Park Summit Apartments, a 148-unit community in Decatur. Instead of waiting years for new construction, the county is protecting housing that already exists.

Why buy existing apartments?

It's faster. New buildings take years of financing, permitting, and construction.

It prevents steep price hikes. When private owners sell, new owners often renovate and raise rents. Public ownership with affordability requirements helps keep homes within reach.

The bigger picture

In July 2026, DeKalb County approved a $155 million Housing Investment Bond Program. It supports affordable rentals, homebuying help, home repairs, and homelessness prevention. Its Multifamily Acquisition Fund is the piece focused on buying and preserving apartment communities like Park Summit.

What this means for you

Homes stay in reach. Putting affordability requirements on a 148-unit community helps protect those apartments from the rent hikes that often follow a private sale.

Neighbors can stay put. Preserving existing apartments helps residents remain near their jobs, schools, healthcare providers, and support systems.

More options may be coming. Park Summit is the start of a larger, countywide effort funded by the $155 million bond program.
