Legacy at Herndon Square: Opens 201 Apartments on the Westside

Legacy at Herndon Square is now leasing, bringing 201 new apartments to Atlanta's Westside near Northside Drive, Georgia Tech and the growing Science Square district. The development is the second and largest phase of the redevelopment of the former Herndon Homes public housing site, which once contained more than 500 public housing apartments.

How Affordable Is It?

Of Legacy's 201 apartments, 170 are income restricted, while 30 are market-rate. The affordable apartments serve households earning between 30% and 80% of the Area Median Income, with some units supported through Atlanta Housing's HomeFlex program.

The community includes one, two and three-bedroom apartments, which is worth noting in a housing market where affordable family-sized apartments can be harder to find. The property also includes a wellness clinic, fitness center, computer and learning center, courtyard and other community spaces.

This Isn't the End of Herndon Square

Legacy is part of a much larger redevelopment of the former Herndon Homes property.

Another phase is already under construction nearby and is expected to add 178 more mixed-income homes in 2027. That makes Herndon Square less of a single apartment project and more of the rebuilding of an entire residential community on land that once housed hundreds of Atlanta families.
