Rainbow Village Expansion Doubles Housing for Homeless Families in Gwinnett County

Rainbow Village has broken ground on a major expansion of its transitional housing campus in Duluth, located in Gwinnett County northeast of Atlanta.

The expansion will add 36 two- and three-bedroom apartments across two new buildings, more than doubling the number of families Rainbow Village can house at one time. Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2026.

Housing With Time to Rebuild

Rainbow Village provides transitional housing, which gives families a temporary home and supportive services while they prepare to live independently.

Families can remain in the program for up to two years, paying modest rent while utilities and internet are included. During that time, families receive support that includes counseling, life-skills development and programs for children.

The longer stay is designed to give parents time to address some of the issues that can make housing instability difficult to escape, including reducing debt, building savings and increasing income.

A Community-Funded Expansion

The expansion has received support from several public, nonprofit, and corporate partners.

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta (FHLBank Atlanta) awarded a $720,000 Affordable Housing Program grant for the new apartments through First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company. The Affordable Housing Program provides funding through participating financial institutions to help create or preserve affordable housing.

Other supporters of the expansion include Gwinnett County, Home Depot, Georgia Power and private foundations.

Once completed, the additional apartments will allow Rainbow Village to serve significantly more families while giving them something that's often difficult to find after homelessness: enough time and stability to prepare for what comes next.
