The Atlanta VA Healthcare System reported significant progress in its efforts to combat veteran homelessness. The organization, which includes the Atlanta VA Medical Center located in Decatur, successfully provided housing for over 400 homeless veterans.

Key Achievements

Permanent Housing Placements: The Atlanta VA and its community partners achieved more than 400 permanent housing placements for homeless veterans. This accomplishment was part of a broader initiative by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which aimed to house 38,000 homeless veterans nationwide in 2022.

Exceeding Goals: The Atlanta VA exceeded its housing goals, contributing to a national total where over 40,000 veterans were housed across the country. Specifically, the Atlanta VA's efforts resulted in 407 permanent housing placements.

Housing First Approach: The strategy employed by the Atlanta VA is based on the "housing first" model. This approach prioritizes providing stable housing to veterans before addressing other issues such as health care or job training. By focusing on securing immediate housing, the program has shown success in reducing barriers that often prevent veterans from obtaining stable living conditions.

Support Services: Alongside providing housing, the Atlanta VA also connects veterans with essential support services necessary for maintaining their new homes. These services include health care access, job training programs, and legal assistance.

These placements were fueled in part by the federal VA grants for homeless veterans.
